Political epistemology and its challenges
Friday 7 February 15:30 until 17:00

Speaker: Dr Michael Hannon and Dr Elise Woodard
Part of the series: Sussex Philosophy Society and Sussex Centre for Social and Political Thought and Intellectual History
Abstract:
In this talk, we aim to do two things. First, we'll explore the central topics, questions, and problems in political epistemology, such as: the role of truth in politics, the epistemology of political disagreement, voter ignorance, political irrationality, distrust of experts, and the epistemic value of democracy. Second, we'll examine some unresolved issues and promising directions for future research. These include the point and purpose of democratic deliberation, the pitfalls of betting democracy on epistemology, a puzzle for theories of rational ignorance, the role of deference in politics, and pragmatic encroachment in political epistemology
