Theorising Childhood and Youth (893L5)
30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Autumn teaching
On this module, you'll explore the theories and debates that have shaped the interdisciplinary field of childhood and youth studies.
In the first half, you'll examine a framework for studying childhood and youth, considering the benefits of interdisciplinarity and reflecting on how childhood and youth are culturally and socially constructed, measured, imagined and governed. You'll also explore how Western ideas about childhood have been shaped by processes such as colonialism and Western child-saving movements.
The second half of the module focuses on case studies of key topics in childhood and youth studies, such as:
- working children
- refugee children.
The module is accompanied by a film club, exploring global and historical representations of childhood and youth.
