Practice Learning 1 (L5095)

On this module, you'll complete a 70-day placement starting in the spring term of your second year. Practice development workshops and group reflection sessions will support the integration of theory and practice.

The placement offers experience across a range of settings, including private, voluntary, independent and statutory organisations, working with diverse client groups. You'll develop the knowledge, skills and values required for practice through:

  • direct practice with service users and carers, including managing cases and understanding complex needs
  • working within organisational policies, structures and social work legislation
  • regular supervision with a designated Practice Educator, including guided reflection on practice, theory and research
  • developing self-directed practice and recognising when to seek supervision
  • receiving timely, constructive feedback from practice educators, professionals, service users and carers.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 450 hours of work. This breaks down into about 121 hours of contact time and about 329 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
