Human Growth and Development (L5089)

30 credits, Level 4

Autumn teaching

This module will provide you with an introduction to the key theories of human development.

We'll explore:

  • attachment
  • resilience
  • loss
  • change.

You'll examine the social and political contexts of these issues and the importance of making connections between individual and family development and disadvantage.

This module explores how factors like class, race, gender, and sexuality contribute to inequality. While not the main focus, you'll also be introduced to using and critiquing statistics and data sets to develop an early appreciation of both quantitative and qualitative research.

Teaching methods include lectures, facilitated seminars, and student-led study groups where you’ll prepare assessed presentations. Specialist workshops will also be delivered by service users, carers, and practitioners on key topics.

Learning is based on a problem-solving approach, using a case study for group work and assessments. Your group presentation will take the form of a poster, allowing you to develop skills in visual communication alongside written and oral explanations.
